Express Entry

Express Entry is an online system used by the Government of Canada to manage applications for permanent residence from skilled workers who are likely to establish themselves economically in Canada.

Express Entry applies to the following immigration categories:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • A portion of the Provincial Nominee Program (see the PNP section)
  • The Express Entry creates a pool of candidates and ranks them according to various criteria, such as age, education, and language skills. The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply (ITA) for permanent residency and benefit from fast processing times of six months or less.

    Provincial Nominee Programs

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is a jointly administered immigration program and provides the authority for provinces and territories to nominate immigration applicants who intend to settle in their province/territory permanently and meet local labour market needs. Each province and territory has its own immigration programs that target certain groups (e.g. students, business people, and skilled workers) and criteria for nomination.

Becoming a permanent resident of Canada through the PNP is a two-step process:

  • Provinces and territories search for candidates in the pool who have expressed an interest in one or multiple provincial nominee programs and may consider them for nomination.
  • Provinces and territories may identify a candidate they feel is suited for their Express Entry PNP stream but who is not yet in the Express Entry pool. The province or territory nominates that individual and instructs them to submit an Express Entry profile.
